Back to school? The hidden dangers of backpacks

Far too often, we see children and teenagers who are suffering from back and neck pain due to improper use of backpacks. Backpacks are a staple for students, but they can also be a source of hidden danger to their spines.

When a backpack is too heavy or is not properly fitted to a child’s body, it can cause strain on the neck, back, and shoulders. This can lead to a variety of problems, including poor posture, misalignment of the spine, and even chronic pain. The weight of the backpack should not exceed more than 10–15% of the child’s body weight, and the backpack should be adjusted to fit the child’s height and body type.

In addition to the weight of the backpack, the way it is worn can also have a negative impact on a child’s spine. If the backpack is worn on only one shoulder, it can put extra strain on one side of the body. The backpack should be worn on both shoulders, with the straps adjusted to fit snugly, and positioned so that it rests comfortably on the lower back.

Another factor that can contribute to back pain is carrying the backpack for an extended period of time. This can cause strain on the back, neck, and shoulders, and lead to chronic pain. To prevent this, children should take frequent breaks to stretch and adjust the backpack, and they should also consider using a rolling backpack to reduce the strain on their backs.

It is also recommended that children engage in regular physical activity to strengthen their core and improve their posture. This will help to prevent injury and reduce the risk of back pain.

By ensuring that the backpack is properly fitted, worn correctly, and not overloaded, and by encouraging regular physical activity, children can reduce the risk of back and neck pain, and maintain good posture and spinal health.

If you or your child is experiencing back pain, it is important to seek the advice of a chiropractor. At our clinic, we can provide an evaluation and recommend a course of treatment to alleviate pain and promote healing.
